When you’re trying to optimize your site for the search engines, it’s very tempting to just say, “forget doing this the right way! I’ll just shell out a bunch of cash, and get it done by some expensive pro!” While a lovely sentiment for the economy, this will harm you in many ways. Expensive doesn’t always equal good, you know. Affordable SEO can actually be the best.

But how do you get affordable SEO? It’s pretty complicated, but there are some very important steps toward getting to the top in the search engine game:

1. Know your audience.

Obviously, “if you build it, they will come” is a bit simplistic. You really do need to know what your intended wants to read about.

You DO know who your intended audience is, right? What gender are they, what’s their family situation, what educational level have they attained, what kinds of jobs do they work (or maybe they’re retired or stay-at-home?)? Those are just a few of the BIG questions you need to think through… the small ones will begin to present themselves, once you have a broad picture.

2. Write top notch content.

Now that you’ve thought about what, you have to actually write it. This isn’t some “get rich MENTALLY” concept, where you can just sit there saying affirmations to yourself and expect results. Write a few dozen articles… and see how your audience responds to them. Make adjustments accordingly, and write a dozen more.

3. Use your keywords properly.

Make sure that whatever your main subject matter is, there are PLENTIFUL references to it all over your site, especially on your main page. Don’t be afraid to experiment with creative language, and the use of alternative key phrases (combinations of more than one key word, that tend to get noticed more easily on search engines).

4. Use links intelligently.

Remember that to receive, you must first give. Find great sites that serve your niche (or related ones), and offer to link to them. It’s your decision whether you offer this as just a kindly gesture sans strings, or if you offer a link exchange.

While affordable SEO isn’t exactly rocket science, it still requires a great deal of thought to do properly… and it’s a lot of work, once the thinking stage is through. But in the end, it’ll all be worth the while.
